Nutrition in Plants: Types of Nutrition in plants II Free study material

What is Nutrition?

The process of intake of food from outside living organism and obtaining nutrients from it is called as NUTRITION.

Autotrophic Nutrition: The mode of nutrition in which organisms make food themselves from simple substances is called autotrophic.

Heterotrophic Nutrition: The mode of nutrition in which organisms take in food prepared by plants is called as heterotrophic.

Some plants depend on food prepared by other plants (Host) they are called as Parasite.

Example: Cuscuta (It does not have chlorophyll)

Some plants trap insects and digest them to absorb nutrients such insect eating plants are called as INSECTIVOROUS.

Example: Pitcher plant

It is green in colour

Leaf is modified to jug like structure with lid having inside hairs directed downward.

Secrete digestive juices.

Saprotrophic nutrition: The mode of nutrition in which organisms take in nutrients from dead and decaying matter is called saprotrophic nutrition.

Called as saprotrophs.

Example: Fungi

Some organisms live together and share both shelter and nutrients. This relationship is called symbiosis. For example, certain fungi live inside the roots of plants. The plants provide nutrients to the fungus and, in return, the fungus provides water and certain nutrients.

Example: lichens

HOW ARE NUTRIENTS REPLENISHED IN THE SOIL?

Plants absorb minerals and nutrients from the soil. So, their amounts in the soil keep on declining. Nutrients in soil can be replenished by:

Adding Fertilisers

Adding manures

Nitrogen fixation by Rhizobium-Symbiotic relationship between Rhizobium and plant provides nitrogen to plant
