Bentham and Hooker system of Classification for Angiosperms II Simple and Easy Notes II For Various Biology Exams II LetsBloomStudyMaterial
BASIS OF OUTLINE FOR CLASSIFICTAION:
The system of classification for seed plants purposed by Bentham and Hooker was a NATURAL system of classification, based on natural affinities among plants.
The classification was published in "The Genera Plantarum" of Bentham and Hooker.
It describes 97205 species and 202 Families.
The system of Classification was Natural, and the concept was pre-Darwinian.
The plant descriptions were based on personal studies from specimens making the classification more authentic.
The PLANT KINGDOM was divided into two Subkingdoms named: Cryptogams and Phanerogams
Cryptogams includes seedless plants while Phanerogams include seeded plants like Gymnosperms and Angiosperms.
Phanerogams comprises of three classes: Dicotyledons, Gymnosperms and Monocotyledons
Dicotyledons were further subdivided into three subclasses: Polypetalae, Gamopetalae and Monochlamydeae (this was on the basis of Petals)
Gymnosperms are placed between Dicotyledons and Monocotyledons.
