What is Recurrent Selection?
- It is the method for selection of desirable individuals that are superior inbreeds from the population followed by recombination of the selected individuals to form a new population
- Recurrent method is a cyclic process that is repeated followed to isolate and improve the superior inbreeds.
- Involves the isolation of superior inbreds from the population and utilize them in hybrid and synthetic varieties.
- The process of Evaluation of Plant Population, Selection of superior plants from population and Developing a population is repeated.
STEPS INVOLVED IN Recurrent METHOD OF SELECTION
- First Year Plants: Several superior plants selected. Selected plants are self-pollinated, Harvested Seeds evaluated.
- Second Year Plants: Separate progeny rows are grown from the selected plants in next generation. The progenies are intercrossed in all possible combination by hand.
- Progeny rows raised by collecting seeds from second year plants- composited seeds from intercross.
- Repeat the same process as in First- and Second-Year Plants, that’s why it is called as Recurrent Selection.
