What is Recurrent Selection?
It is the method for selection of desirable individuals that are superior inbreeds from the population followed by recombination of the selected individuals to form a new population
Recurrent method is a cyclic process that is repeated followed to isolate and improve the superior inbreeds.
Involves the isolation of superior inbreds from the population and utilize them in hybrid and synthetic varieties.
The process of Evaluation of Plant Population, Selection of superior plants from population and Developing a population is repeated.
STEPS INVOLVED IN Recurrent METHOD OF SELECTION
First Year Plants: Several superior plants selected. Selected plants are self-pollinated, Harvested Seeds evaluated.
Second Year Plants: Separate progeny rows are grown from the selected plants in next generation. The progenies are intercrossed in all possible combination by hand.
Progeny rows raised by collecting seeds from second year plants- composited seeds from intercross.
Repeat the same process as in First- and Second-Year Plants, that’s why it is called as Recurrent Selection.
